Chapter 1

Commentary

 His name is Simon, Rocky is his nickname

 A slave of Jesus, on assignment as a messenger from  Jesus the Anointed One

 “of Jesus” added to prevent confusion;  The meaning of  Apostle is literally “messenger on assignment.”

 May grace and peace be multiplied to you

 in the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Master.

 His divine ability to live and to fear God’s Goodness

 By Whom the greatest and most valuable promises have   been freely given to us

 as you flee the undisciplined and distorted feelings and   desires of the  natural world.

 So, for this same purpose (of sharing a divine nature,)   diligently strive

 to add valor to your faith

 For as these things  grow in you

 you  will not remain idle or unfruitful

 in your knowledge

 But anyone who does not have these things currently   active in their lives

 has his eyes closed and is blind.

 He is becoming oblivious to the cleansing of his past   spiritual failures

 Instead, brothers, be diligent

 to confirm that you are called

 Because, while you are doing this, you should not   stumble and fall spiritually.

 This is how your entrance into the Eternal Kingdom

 of our Master and Savior, Jesus the Anointed One

 will be richly provided for.

 Therefore, I am not being negligent  in reminding you

b

 about these things

 even though you are aware of them

 and have stood firm in the truth which is with us now.

 So I consider it important,  as long as I am in this body

 to motivate you with reminders,

 for I am aware that I will leave this body soon

 because our Master, Jesus the Anointed One

 has made it obvious to me.

 So, I am hurrying  to prepare you (by writing this)

 so that after my exodus

 you will be reminded.

 What we have told you

b

 about the power and presence(among humans)  of our   Master, Jesus the Anointed One

 was not based on carefully crafted myths.

 But we were observers of that One’s (glorified)   greatness

 For he received honor and glory from Father God

 the mega-magnificent Glory spoke of Him

 in an extraordinary way,  saying

 “This is My Son, My loved One,

e

 In Whom I delighted.”

 Past tense, of the Pre-incarnate Jesus.

 This voice we heard coming out of Heaven

b

 when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

 And the prophetic message is continually being even   more confirmed.

 And, ideally, you are paying close attention to it, (living   by it)

 (following it) like a lamp in a dark and dismal place

 until that Day is dawning

 The signs of the Day of the Lord, as in the Olivet       Discourse. Peter was an eyewitness of that monologue.

 and the source of light rises in your hearts

 fully enlightening  your hearts

 But everyone (must ) know this first

b

 that no written (Biblical) prophecy is self-fulfilling.

 Does not create the future it describes, or allow humans   to make it come true.

 For these prophecies were not created by human will

 carried on (created, revealed and transmitted), they are   not man-made predictions.

 but they are from the Holy Spirit,

 Literally “a spirit that is holy”

 established through the words of  “holy men of God”

Chapter 2

1

a

But false prophets came among the people

b

and false teachers will come among you

c

smuggling in destructive attitudes.

attitudes/preferences/practices

Some of them will even disown the Owner Who bought them,

e

resulting in their quick destruction.

a

And many will follow them out to destruction

Many believers will follow the false teachers

b

Because of them, people will say bad things about the Way of the Truth

a

And in their greed they will use polished messages, to make you their market.   

Getting control of you is their goal. They expect to become rich at your expense.

The ancient judgment (against them) is not on pause, and their destruction is not asleep.

For if God did not spare the angels who failed (to stay holy)

but forced them into the dark caverns of Tartarus

and keeps them there, holding them for trial;

and if He did not spare the original natural world

but He did spare and guard the “public voice of justice,”  Noah, the eighth one,

but He caused a downpour on the world of those without fear (of God);

and he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to be overthrown 

b

and reduced them to ashes,

c

and He has made of them an example of the ones who don’t fear (God).

and he rescued that fair-minded man Lot,

Fair-minded/righteous/just, emphasis on Justice

who was miserably burdened down

by the random behavior of the transients,

Random/reckless/careless

for that just man, who had made his home among them,

was tormented in his soul day after day as he saw and heard their lawless actions…(Since all this is true, then)

The Master is (always) aware and rescues those who fear the Goodness of God, from their trials

b

but He keeps the unjust detained until the day of judgment,

Detained/chastened/punished/restricted/incarcerated

and especially those who follow the polluted feelings of the flesh

and despise management.

i.e. hate being controlled by managers

Thrill seekers, self-serving,

they do not tremble before officials.  

officials/dignitaries/authorities/rulers/leaders (those highly esteemed).

Instead, they speak insults, intending to cause damage.

(On the other hand ) Angels, which are greater in strength and ability,

b

do not bring insulting charges before the Master against those same leaders.

Yet these illogical men are living as wild animals

b

born to be captured and left to rot.

They speak insults against whatever they don’t understand.

As they rot (inside,) they will collapse into total decay.

They are repaid with injustice.

Those who gratify themselves with luxury in the daytime

are stains and flaws

as they excite themselves with their flirting.

when they come to your meals.

They  have the eyes of an adulteress (on the hunt) and sin non-stop,

They capture unstable souls.

Their hearts are trained in greed.

Their followers are cursed.

Leaving the good practices

they strayed away and followed the path of Balaam, son of Bosor

who loved unjust income.

His lawlessness was exposed

when a voiceless donkey spoke with a human voice

And stopped the prophet’s insane actions

These (people) are dry springs

b

Clouds  being driven by a storm

c

The densest blackness of the eternal darkness has been reserved for them.

Speaking grand nonsense, 

b

They draw people into unrestrained sensuality by appealing to their own natural feelings

c

They attract even those who had already fled from other stray lifestyles.

19

a

Those promising (this kind of) freedom are themselves slaves of decay,

slaves of decay: they have no choice but to serve the demands created as they continue to rot inside.

for they are slaves of anything that (morally)weakens them .

For if the ones who are fleeing the defilements of the natural world

b

by their knowledge of the Master and Savior, Jesus the Anointed One,

c

(if they) return and are involved  with those things again, and weakened by them,

d

then they are in worse condition than they were at the beginning. 

21

It would have been better for them not to have known the steps to righteousness

than to have known it, and then to have turned away

c

from the holy instructions given to them.

They illustrate the true proverb,

b

“A dog will return to its own vomit,

c

and a washed sow will return to the mire”

Chapter 3

1

a

This is already the second letter I am writing to you, my loved ones.

b

in which I am rousing you up by refounding your sincere thinking.

Refounding/re-establishing, not quite the same as re-building

a

(I am) reminding you of the previously recorded announcements,

b

proclaimed by the holy prophets and those on assignment

Those on assignment: literally “apostles”

c

from our Master and Rescuer

3

a

And everyone (must also) know this first,

b

that on the last day (before judgment)

c

scoffers(mocking for fun and) going along with their own feelings

Feelings/desires/lusts/ambitions

4

a

will be saying “What happened to the promise of His appearing and being present with us?

b

For all the fathers have been put to rest 

Put to rest (buried)

c

and this is the way it has always been since the start of creation”

a

Those willing to believe this are oblivious, (to the fact) that the heavens are very old, 

b

and the land came out of water and from among the waters were gathered

c

according to what God spoke.

and (also according to God’s message) the ancient world was covered in water and destroyed.

Now, the current sky and land, according to the same message,

b

are being held in reserve, kept for the fire of the day of judgment

and the destruction of those who do not fear God.

My loved ones! Do not be oblivious to the fact that

to our Master, one day is a like a thousand years

and a thousand years is like one day

The Master is not tardy about the promise

for some are saying He is tardy.

Instead, He is stretching His patience toward us

because it is not His intention that anyone be destroyed.

He is giving us extra time so all might turn (to Him.)

Turn around/rethink/repent/return

10

a

Still , the day of the Master

will come like a thief at night

and the sky will make a loud booming sound and move aside.

Substances will burn and dissolve,

and the land and its structures (made by man) will be burned down.

11

a

(Since) all these will be deconstructed,

you are forced to act

by raising your personal standards in holiness

and the fear of God’s Goodness

12

a

While hoping for and being diligent about the arrival of the Day of God

when the skies will burn and dissipate

and substances will burn and melt.

13

a

We are hoping for the new skies and new land

according to His promise

where justice will make its home.

14

a

Therefore, since  you, my loved ones, are hoping for these things

Be diligent to be without spot or flaw, so that He will come to you in peace,

In peace, and not in condemnation

15

a

Treat the apparent delay of our Master as salvation (for those yet to be saved)

delay/patience

as Paul, our loved brother, wrote to you,

according to the wisdom that was given to him. 

16

a

Paul, in all his letters, talks about these complicated things,

which the uneducated and the unstable twist, along with the rest of the writings

to their own destruction.

17

a

Loved ones, since you already know this, be on full alert

so that no one be led astray by the deceptions of the transients,

Transients/unplaced/unassigned

Because even you could fall from (the strong positions) you stand on.

18

a

Instead, you should be growing up in the grace, and knowledge

of our Master and Rescuer, Jesus, the Anointed One

To Him be all The Esteem, now and into the eternal  day.

all The Esteem (praise/glory), the use of capitals is for emphasis.
